A Death in Somers.
The Courant reports on the apparent suicide of a 43 year old inmate at the Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers. The article notes that Edwardo Valesquez, 48, “serving a 43-month sentence for drug possession….” The reader comments express considerable dismay that someone would go to prison in Connecticut for 43 months for possessing less than four (4) ounces of marijuana. They don’t, and the tormented Mr. Valesquez did not.
According to the Judicial Department’s website, Mr. Valesquez was sentenced to prison for a variety of crimes, the least of which was the marijuana charge. In 2010, he was convicted of 1st degree larceny and burglary in the 3rd degree, both felonies. In addition to the misdemeanor marijuana charge, there was a conviction for failure to appear. The effective sentence for the 4 charges was 43 months.
