Lieberman Out.

United States Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) is expected to announce Wednesday that he will not seek a 5th term in 2012, Daily Ructions has learned.  Lieberman has invited supporters to an event at the Marriott hotel in Stamford Wednesday afternoon for his announcement.

Lieberman rallied from a humiliating Democratic primary defeat in 2006 and won re-election as an independent that November in an epic contest with Greenwich millionaire Ned Lamont.  Lieberman enjoyed wide support among Republicans that year, though that’s diminished since he cast votes for President Barack Obama’s stimulus package and healthcare proposal.

That makes sense to me. If you are Joe Lieberman, and you are planning to announce a run for reelection, you would not choose the day after Susan B.’s announcement, thereby creating the impression that you are worried about her challenge. On the other hand, if you are Susan B. and you learn Joe is about to announce that he will not run, you jump the gun and announce (perhaps) a few weeks (months?) before you planned to.

Would that he had come to this correct decision in early 2006. Good riddance.

7 Is this it for Joe? { 01.18.11 at 4:30 pm }

What’s the polling look like among Dems and Independents? I would think some of the anger has dissipated since he was pivotal in getting Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed and he supported health care reform. He’s an influential voice and has been very effective on certain issues so part of me would be sorry to see him go. All in all, his contributions, expertise and useful role as a moderate bridge builder with conservative Dems and Repubs, should continue to make him a formidable candidate.

Ho-hum. I like Joe and am sorry to see him go, but as the people of Connecticut never learn, they will simply send another, bluer, Democrat to the Senate.

Good riddance joe. Now that everyone knows that “moderate” = liberal marxist pretending not to be a liberal marxist, his cover is blown.

It was William F. Buckley Jr. who got him elected in the first place. Of course the other choice was Lowell Weicker. Buckley’s PAC had a bumper sticker that read : Honk in you agree that Lowell Weicker is a horse’s ass.

Becareful what you wish for
Joe did a lot of good for this state. And was a very honest guy and always met with the everyday people of this wonderful state.

The last thing CT needs is some left leaning fiscally incompetent Democrat that the voters are sure to put in. At least Joe tried to make the best decisions but the Democrats hated him for not playing party politics. Susan is a nightmare, just like Blumy. In case you haven’t figured it out people, the Democrats have been sinking this state for years from Hartford and DC. Who else can you blame for being in the mess we are in? Republican governors who had to deal with a Democrat controlled legilislature?

Golly…maybe his decision had something to do with having the lowest level of support of any senator facing re-election. His biggest problem the next two years will be figuring out how to get media attention…oh, wait, that’s what he’s done for 30 years.
