Notes on the Week Ahead.
Getting candidates to accept debate invitations and then working out the format rules remain much on the minds of campaigns and media outlets. ”Meet the Press” has announced three debates, according to The Hotline Online. The first, featuring candidates for the Unites States Senate from Florida, takes place on Sunday. Two of the three candidates have accepted. Whether independent Governor Charlie Crist would participate was still in doubt.
The hotly contested Illinois and Colorado races will be featured in October. An invitation to debate on Meet the Press is one of the informal benchmarks of a campaign, signaling its competitive and noteworthy. Republican Linda McMahon accepted an invitation several weeks ago from NBC to participate in a Sunday Meet the Press encounter with Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal. No date’s been announced because it’s not clear that the 5-term attorney general has accepted the opportunity to appear on a national forum with Mrs. McMahon.
As economic news goes from grim to dire, the Wall Street Journal reports that the Cook Report early this week “expects to downgrade the ratings of an additional 10 Democratic [House] seats.” We’ll see if any New England seats are among them. Watch for a post this week on Daily Ructions on the competition among Republican House candidates in Connecticut and other New England states for funding and attention from national Republican organization.

Kevin, the danger in appearing on “Meet the Depressed” is what ends up on the cutting room floor, when the tape is “edited for time restraints.” Which is why I don’t watch any of the Sunday Shows. The editors are too apt to insert bias into what the public sees. Call me cynical or call me knowledgeable, I do not believe MSM can be objective.
Linda McMahon has had her action plan to revive small business and jobs posted since day one, a year ago. It is detailed and readily accessable to any one. Blumenthal’s web site, “On the Issues,” features one paragraph each for ten issues. Each paragraph is riddled with cliches and backslapping sound bites.
Mr. Blumenthal will delay agreeing to or participating in any debate with Mrs. McMahon for as long as possible. His performance against Mr. Alpert in March was abysmal, and there is no evidence to suggest he has improved.
Mr. Blumenthal is all facade and no substance. He cannot comment knowledgeably on the key issues, such as jobs and the economy, that concern voters today since he has no experience or expertise in those areas.
He cannot ‘win’ a debate with Mrs. McMahon, he can only lose it. And with it his meager chances for winning in November.
If Blumenthal is smart, he will request weekly debates with McMahon. If there are only a couple of debates, McMahon will soundly defeat Blumenthal on personality and style. All that is needed in a limited debate format are a few good soundbites. If there are several debates, then Blumenthal will have the opportunity to demonstrate his grasp of the issues (if he has any).
