Retired State Employee and U.S. Representative John Larson Presided Over Government Shutdown.
Unhinged U.S. Representative John Larson (D-CT), took to the floor of the House of Representatives to decry the shutdown of the federal government. The East Hartford Democrat and retired state employee chose not to share his experience forcing a government shutdown in Connecticut 22 years ago during a budget battle over the imposition of a state income tax. Larson was president of the state Senate as budget proposals went back and forth between the legislature and the income tax advocate then-Governor Lowell P. Weicker, Jr.
In one memorable moment for those who lived through the fight, Larson, cornered by reporters, broke into a jig when the questions started to demand substantive answers.
A shutdown of state government in Connecticut would have a bigger effect on Larson today. His wife, formerly a shipping clerk, snagged a job in state government over 199 others to land in a state-funded agency, working as an assistant to a Larson supporter. There’s something to holler about.
