Where In the World Is Gerry Garcia’s Public Funding?

Former New Haven alderman Gerry Garcia, Democratic candidate for secretary of the state, submitted an application for $375,000 in public funding for the August 10th primary campaign.  His campaign, however, is not among the 25 campaigns on the agenda for grants from the Citizens Election Program.

Could the keen eyes at the CEP have found some defects in Garcia’s documents that show how the required $75,000 in contributions of $100 or less were raised?  It is in the business of giving out money, so something could be amiss, postponing a decision for at least a week as the primary is upon us.

Garcia faces House Majority Leader Denise Merrill, the endorsed party candidate, in the Democratic primary.

UPDATE: A look at Garcia’s “Itemized Statement accompanying application for Public Grant” reveals many, many cash contributions in the week before the July 16th filing deadline, the sort of trend in a report that raises the suspicions of agency auditors.

Or, it could be that (as the agenda says), “the next scheduled meeting for consideration of applications for public grants from the Citizen’s Election Fund is July 22, 2010 (Special Meeting) at 4:00 pm via teleconference”.

C”mon Kevin, you should know better than that. The deadline for submission of grant applications to be on today’s agenda was 5:00 pm on 7/15. Garcia submitted his grant application on 7/16. Grackle is right, the 7/22 special meeting is to consider last minute primary grant applications that came in on the 16th. This is all in the law. Try 9-706, I forget which subsection, I think it’s (g).

It has absolutely, positively nothing to do with your imaginary drama regarding cash contributions. You’re like a little kid who just loves to make things up and see what the adult’s reactions are.

EdMfromBranford- Several of the items on the agenda for the 7/21 meeting were received on 7/16, the same day Garcia submitted his application.

Then the SEEC is raping the taxpayers once again by logging hundreds of hours of overtime when they didn’t have to. Yes, they put eight candidates on the agenda who submitted their grant applications on 7/16. Notice how ALL of these are Democrats? Six Democrat State Rep. candidates all involved in primaries and Democrat State Senator Don DeFronzo (former Chairman of the GAE Committee) and Democrat State Senator Ed Meyer, the present Vice Chairman of the GAE Committee. Neither of the two Senators are involved in primaries so it’s not like they need their money anytime soon. Don’t tell me the SEEC doesn’t play favorites.

Of the 70 or so people that are permanent employees of the SEEC, does anyone want to venture a guess as to how many of them are registered Republicans?

It ok to gove cash as long as you give your name and address in the filing.

bhogan, I know you’re not long on brains but would it be too much trouble to ask you to write coherently when you post here?

All cash contributions require a contributor’s certification form signed by the contributor swearing that the contribution is being made from personal funds, is not being reimbursed in any manner, is not being made as a loan, and is not an otherwise prohibited contribution. The treasurer must submit a copy of that certification as part of the back up documentation that is required when applying for the taxpayer handout. What I find strange is that if the contribution is in the form of a personal check, the SEEC doesn’t require the contributor to “certify” to all that crap, only a copy of the check is considered to be sufficient back up documentation.

Garcia is on the agenda for 7/22.
