A Federal Budget Cut We Could Live With.
New York‘s Steve Fishman writes a sensational piece in its current issue featuring extensive conversations with imprisoned fraudster Bernard Madoff, who’s in a North Carolina prison serving 150 year sentence for his nearly $65 billion Ponzi scheme. The article opens with the news that Madoff participates in weekly therapy sessions at the prison. That’s right, the federal government provides a mental health professional to Madoff, who days she assures the 72 year old that he is “absolutely not a sociopath.” Many health insurance policies do not cover weekly therapy sessions, but taxpayers are providing them for Madoff. He’s in prison. He’s supposed to feel remorse and endure some suffering, despite his claim that he is “a good person.”
Torment that derives from reflection enforced by solitude and isolation is part of the sentence.

I would feel much better if Bernie was going to church once or twice a week to repent for his sins versus the therapy. He deprived clients of present and future earnings and he gets to spend the rest of his short life in prison. It’s probably the best justice our system could dispense under the circumstances.
