Bob Ward to Succeed Bob Jaekle as Republican State Auditor.

Minority leaders Representative Lawrence Cafero and Senator John McKinney have agreed to support Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles Bob Ward as the next Republican State Auditor upon the retirement of 20 year incumbent Bob Jaekle, sources tell Daily Ructions.  Jaekle served as House Republican minority leader from 1987-1991.  He was the majority leader from 1985-1987, the last time Republicans held a majority in the lower chamber.  The popular Ward led the thinning ranks of House Republicans from 1995-2007.

Some denizens of the capitol village had expected that McKinney would possess the influence to name one of his allies to the auditor’s post. House Republicans also claim the Republican Legislator Commissioner’s job with former state Representative Bill Hamzy.

The State Auditors, according to their website, “provide independent, unbiased and objective opinions and recommendations on the operations of the State government and the State’s effectiveness in safeguarding it’s assets. We also strive to assist State agencies in achieving sound fiscal management and the efficient use of State resources.”

The other State Auditor, Democrat Kevin Johnston, a former member of the Senate, is also retiring after long service.  Speaker of the House Christopher Donovan and Senate President Donald Williams will name his successor.
