Earth Day Resolution: Hoard Your Bulbs.
What a dilemma the most ardent Earth Day celebrants face. Worries continue to grow over the health effects of low-energy, mercury bulbs consumers will soon have to purchase. Reports cited by The Telegraph of London raise serious questions about “the cancer causing chemicals” in the compact florescent lamps (CFL).
One German scientist cautions against using them near your head or in an unventilated room.
Stockpile incandescent bulbs while you can. Mercury-laden CFLs may be Green to Gold to Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection commissioner Daniel C. Esty but bulbs that create “environmental smog” by releasing “phenol, naphthalene and styrene” sound like a menacing mandate. The links in The Telegraph article provide more ominous information.

So much of what passes for “green” science eventually becomes known as “bad” science. Hybrid cars that are never cost justifiable, even with government subsidies. Green bulbs that harm the smug green users more than the original incandescents ever harmed the environment. Oh ByTheWay my Green lightbulbs are not lasting anywhere near what the incandescents did. Whats up with that? Well…..turns out the life span calculations were not as simple as they would have had you believe, shocking!

Compact fluorescents do have the potential to save homeowners money, as long as certain tips are followed.
Like other fluorescent lights, compact fluorescents require more energy to charge up when turned on than incandescents, especially if the weather is cold. For best results, they should not be turned on and off frequently. According to Lawrence University, lifespan is greatly affected by the amount of time the bulbs are turned on. They should be on for at least an hour or they will lose a great deal of their lifespan, if they are on for five minutes at a time they will lose eighty five percent of their lifespan. Using CFLs in heated rooms improves performance, including brightness. According to the University of Colorado, compact fluorescents may also require the power company to provide additional energy.
Last year I found a great deal and I purchased 500 incandescent light bulbs. Screw the enviro-nutters.
I can’t stand the CFLs because the quality of the light is not as good. I wish liberals would mind their own damn business. If you don’t like incandescents don’t use them, but don’t force your preferences on me.
