Friday Decision Dump for State Supreme Court in Byciewicz Case.

The Supreme Court of Connecticut will release its full written opinion this afternoon in the Susan Byciewicz case that gobsmacked state politics in May, on the eve of the Democratic state nominating convention.  The Court ruled on that stormy day that Secretary of the State Byciewicz did not meet the state statute requirement that an attorney general have spent 10 years in “active practice” as a lawyer.  Ms. Bysiewicz initiated the action for the court ruling in the face of questions about her experience as a lawyer. The decision will rehash her failed claim to wedge letters tell constituents to write to their congressman into the rubric of practicing law.

Events have buffeted Ms. Bysiewicz.  She began the year running for governor, switched to the race for attorney general when incumbent Richard Blumenthal began his bid for the United States Senate, and felt the lash of a Blumenthal investigation over political activities in her state office. She ends the political season as an interested spectator, said by supporters and detractors to be hoping she can mount a Norma Desmond return in two years if voters clear the bench of Democratic officeholders on November 2nd.  Her path to another stumble for statewide office runs through the 5th Congressional District, where a loss this year by incumbent Democrat Chris Murphy would hobble a foe for the Senate in 2012.
