Hope v. Despair

At the halfway mark for this special election day in Massachusetts, we have canvassed our professional political friends and learned:

Democrats from Washington parachuted into the Bay State to rescue bewildered Martha Coakley may be moved from “Anxious” to “Despairing.”  The weekend found them hunting for an opening, a way forward.  It never appeared.  They are furious with the team around Coakley.  The Democratic pros vow, with God as their witness, that Coakley’s people will never again get the chance to destroy another Democratic legacy seat!

How bad is it?  One Democratic mercenary describes working in today’s GOTV operation as “Shoveling #@^* against the tide.”

Reports of a heavy suburban turnout have Republican operatives experiencing a sensation that had become a distant memory.  They are giddy at how the day is taking shape.  Enthusiasm for Brown did not, as they feared, peak last week in the face of a Coakley onslaught.  Republican mercenaries, enjoying their GOTV duties are looking for a 6-8 point win.

Nobody wants to discuss whose idea was it to take away the governor’s power to fill a vacancy in the Senate.
