It’s the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Greatest Night in Show Business!

‘Greatest Night in Show Business’ is an interesting question, which involves questions of definition. Taking it very broadly, I’d hold out for December 22, 1808, when Beethoven personally introduced his Fifth and Sixth symphonies, Fourth Piano Concerto, and the Choral Fantasy (and that wasn’t the whole program). No roof blew off, however–the hall was cold, the musicians underrehearsed, and the evening no triumph.
