Jeff Wright to Qualify for Public Financing.

Aspiring cash cop, Republican candidate for state treasurer Jeff Wright, will make the deadline to qualify for a $750,000 load of taxpayer cash to finance his campaign.  The Newington mayor, who made a brief foray into the race for governor early this year, has raised approximately $83,000 in qualifying contributions of no more than $100 each, sources say.

Wright is seen as a bright prospect for Republicans, who have not elected an under-ticket candidate to statewide office since 1994.  Three term incumbent Denise Nappier is said by Democratic insiders to have been struggling to reach the $75,000 threshold.  She has until noon Thursday  October 8th to submit her documents for consideration by the commission on the following Thursday or Friday–and there’s always the agency’s elastic cure period if she needs more time.

Are you sure about Thurs being the deadline? The calendar on the SEEC website says the deadline is Oct 8, unless I’m reading it wrong.

Thanks, DJ. You are right. Anyone submitting an application for funds in October would not receive the money until the middle of the month. That would be a short time to spend that much money on an underticket office.

With McMahon spending $50 million, Malloy spending $8.5, Foley spending several million and Blumenthal kicking in $2 million ?, I suspect spending by Treasurer candidates will be a waste of the million or whatever it is that they get. An absolute waste of taxpayer dollars. Hope only Wright qualifies and then Nappier wins.

I guess Tom Foley is in the minority on public financing even among the candidates running with him.

Jeff Wright is a tremendous individual that will make a terrific “Cash Cop” for the state of Connecticut. He is a man of unquestioned integrity, terrific humor and tremendous qualifications.

It’s time that the 1994 stigma gets put aside and that Connecticut residents do the right thing and join me in casting your vote for Jeff Wright to Treasurer.
