Leapin’ Lizards Alert: Dan Malloy and John Rowland In Radio Love Fest. Tom Foley Otherwise Engaged.
Tough guy former prosecutor Dan Malloy, the Democratic nominee for governor, rearranged his schedule Wednesday to engage in a cringe-inducing, sick-making interview with John Rowland, the $100,000 a year part-time Waterbury economic development official, radio talk show host, and felonious former governor. The former Stamford mayor congratulated Mr. Rowland–who Mr. Malloy persistently called “governor”–on his new WTIC show, “Church and State.”
The obsequious 13-minute exchange included compliments on each other’s wives and a review of the stresses and strains of campaigning. Mr. Malloy dazzled the disgraced Republican with his plans for tourism. No mention of John Rowland’s betrayal of the public trust and acceptance of charter flights in exchange for generous tax credits. Neither made any reference to home improvements provided by companies with government contracts.
Rowland congratulated anyone who engages in “the business of politics.” Indeed.
Rowland sanitized his sorry history when he claimed his life would have been different if he’d not sought a third term as governor. The crimes he was prosecuted for, however, occurred before he began his third term in 2003. Maybe he meant if he hadn’t still been governor in 2003, he would not have been caught.
The unhappiest surprise of the program was Dan Malloy agreeing to appear on it to begin with. His Republican opponent, Tom Foley, has been invited but, according to his campaign spokesperson, has been too busy to accept. Advantage: Foley.

Rowland introduced the Waterbury GOP to Foley. He was one of his biggest supporters early on. I don’t think there’s anything to read into this unless there’s been some falling out between Rowland and Foley that few people know about.
Waterbury voted 15 delegates for Fedele and 3 for Foley at the convention.
The author must be one of those reporters that has to include every detail of a persons negative past when writing about someone. Do you mention Blumy lying about his military record each time you write about him? Or how about mention Lewinski each time you write about Clinton or about Mary Jo if writing about Teddy. Rowland served his time, leave him alone.
Leave Rowland Alone. The guy did his time. He is doing a good job for Waterbury. He is smart. He is faithful to his Church. He is a great father and family man. Leave him alone. He understands Politics in CT. What do you want from him. I got it! How about one kidney and one quart of A positive. Will that work?
Etiquette-wise, Rowland resigned the office, so he is entitled to be called “governor” just as Richard Nixon was entitled to be called “president” after he resigned.
And what would ol’ Dan have discussed with the governor regarding his poor behavior that hasn’t already been rehashed and dissected ad nauseum?
If you had it your way sir Rowland would be spending 3 hours a day appologizing and kicking himself. It gets to a point where people have exhausted their right to give hell to Rowland. Unless your mother Teresa yourself Kevin, give johnny some peace.
I carry no brief for Rowland, but I did have a long exchange on C. McEnroe’s blog on the question whether Foley not qualified for governor because he was insufficiently critical of Rowland. Apparently, in an interview Foley said, among other things, that he was not sure if Rowland should have gone to prison. I think Foley and I may be on the same page on Rowland; we know he was wrong, should have left office, but we don’t know, didn’t follow, the details. Perhaps, with knowledge of existence of McEnroe-Rennie-type opinion, Foley has made a conscious decision to stay clear of Rowland. I’d be curious to know if Malloy now disqualified. And, by the way, Rowland’s radio show so far not particularly engaging, but good luck to him and Foley.
