Malloy Appointee’s Bankruptcy Raises Questions.
The Malloy administration and its choice to lead the complex Department of Social Services, Roderick Bremby, preferred not to provide many specifics about the details of the former Kansas official’s 2007 bankruptcy petition. A look at the document suggests they may have to agree to some explaining. Bremby has suggested in interviews that his and his then-wife’s financial troubles were due to medical issues. It shows each had health insurance coverage and Mr. Bremby’s wife was employed as a doctor on the date of the petition. They also had $31,911.27 in student loans.
One of the oddest aspects of the petition is the section on credit counseling. Public policy has tipped heavily in recent years toward requiring people in debt to receive counseling from an approved public or private agency. The Brembys checked this section of the petition:
1. Within the 180 days before filing for bankruptcy with a lawyer, I received a briefing from a credit counseling agency approved by the United States trustee or bankruptcy administrator that outlined the opportunities for available credit counseling and assisted me in performing a related budget analysis, and I have a certificate from the agency describing the services provided to me. Attach a copy of the certificate and a copy of any debt repayment plan developed through the agency.
They didn’t need 180 days or even 180 minutes from filing their case to get counseling. The mandatory certificate states Roderick Bremby got his counseling at 4:39 p.m. EDT on March 31, 2007. His wife completed hers 15 minutes later, the documents show. That seems to be honoring the requirements of the law in the thinnest way.

Didn’t anybody from Team Malloy vette this guy? Did the standard but thorough State Police background check ( required for all appointees) point out the obvious? In 2007 he owned 10+year old cars, had no cash assetts, minimal 401K reserves—this man has never been financially stable.He shows no capacity or self discipline necessary to be financially prudent or fiscally aware. This is the best out there? Is this a quid pro quo with Sebellius?? How did Malloy’s people meet him?
So one of the highest spending state agencies will be run by a guy who lived beyond his means?

If he was such a great “friend” of Secretary Sebelius, and she knew he needed a job, why didn’t she hire him at HHS??? Huh? Why should we be stuck with him?
