Malloy Inaugural Ball Soldout. Organizers Seek More Space.
Supporters, well-wishers, and hangers-on have snapped up the 1,750 tickets to the inaugural ball marking the swearing in of Governor-Elect Dannel Malloy and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Nancy Wyman on January 5, 2011. Wyman told Daily Ructions this afternoon that demand for tickets was brisk and that she and others are working with the Governor’s Foot Guard and the Connecticut Convention Center to expand the number of tickets that will be available for happy Democrats to celebrate the first member of their party to win a gubernatorial election since 1986. That’s a lot of pent-up demand.

You seem rather cynical. How does a ball attended by people who can afford $200 per ticket for such stuffy entertainment equate to people being excited about impending rubber stamping of expensive legislation? If nothing else, the attendees appear to be able to pay for expensive frippery. All this extravagance may be able to prime the pump, if any of the crumbs trickle down to the Tiny Tim Cratchits of Connecticut. Who knows, with the ball so closely following the holidays, the attendees may still be imbued with the Christmas Carol spirits and experience a Scrooge-like transformation — changed souls seeking to redeem their past sins by generosity towards the less fortunate, like taxing the rich and giving to the poor. Wait a minute. Aren’t the attendees supposed to be primarily Democrats (and a few Republicans seeking favors)? Too late for the transformation! They are ALL already known for taxing and spending. Haven’t the Republicans proven their propensity for deficit when in power, not unlike that of their loyal opposition, the Democrats?
I guess, then, I get your point. Since the Democrats rule the legislative and executive branches of government, and hold all the statewide elected offices, you think the ball is some sort of party suggestive of impending expensive legislation that the wholly (not holy) empowered Democrats are sure to pass. Maybe you are correct, but with billions of dollars of debt, Connecticut is more likely to see Democrats (like Bubba!) with a sense of fiscal responsibility and foresight necessary to balance the budget. The ball, then, may be more indicative of the past, the era of fiscal irresponsibility, and is more suggestive of the last hurrah before a new era of self-imposed and well deserved austerity, an anticlimactically discombobulating and odd surrealistic imagery that is out of synch with impending future realities: sic transit gloria mundi or semper tyrannis, chose your own poison!
