Mrs. McMahon Unleashes Another Vietnam Ad. Earnest Veterans Condemn Blumenthal Claims.
This is why it’s getting closer. Republican Linda McMahon’s campaign has dropped a powerful ad on Democrat Attorney General Richard Blumenthal hours before their final debate. The 30 second commercial features 10 dignified veterans decrying Mr. Blumenthal’s claims to have served in Vietnam. He did not. The chilling censure of the Democratic candidate by the unadorned veterans finds its power in its stark recital of the truth as revealed in video recordings and newspaper accounts of speeches Mr. Blumenthal delivered over at least 5 years. His claims of having “misspoke” are no match for the testimony of these veterans.

Does anyone else find the “I’m Linda McMahon and I approve this message” particularly jarring after this commercial? The fundamental fact remains that until Linda McMahon became suddenly interested in the State Board of Education, she had never served her country, let alone her state. Like it or not, Dick Blumenthal is in fact veteran, and did serve his country. He may deserve a “chilling censure” for misspeaking about the nature of his service, but Linda McMahon has not earned the right to deliver the rebuke.
Fuzzy, every American has the right to deliver the rebuke. Blumenthal didn’t just misspeak, i.e., say that he took Criminal Procedure in law school when he actually took Civil Procedure, or say that he filed a lawsuit in 1996 when he actually filed it in 1997.
These “misspeaks” were deliberate. They were expressly intended to earn the support of veterans around him, to show that this man of privilege was “one of them,” when he was not. I am a recent veteran, and I’ll never misspeak to suggest that I served in Iraq or Afghanistan, because it’s simply not true, and it’s an insult to those who did. Serving in Vietnam (or Iraq) is like being pregnant or having cancer: you’re not a “little bit” pregnant and you didn’t “kind of” serve in Vietnam. Mr. Blumenthal expressly coveted honor that HE didn’t earn, and he sought that honor for political gain.
Your logic is as “fuzzy” as if you said that only people who pay taxes can complain about government waste. That’s ridiculous.
This man’s career should go down in flames, as quickly as possible.
Observer,
Perhaps it’s more that I don’t think she deserves to be a senator.
What’s more interesting with her faux outrage, however, is that the fact remains that if Dick Blumenthal was trying to dupe people into thinking he was a combat vet, he did an astonishingly poor job of it. Since the New York Times story first broke, how many people have come forward who was under the impression that Dick had served in combat?
I would be more interested in an explanation from “The Fighter” Dick Blumenthal on how he got 5 draft deferments and managed to get a slot in a Washington DC Marine Reserve unit without resorting to political influence (I’m sure working in the White House as an aide to Daniel Patrick Moynihan had no influence on him getting that position). If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
NO ONE in the Connecticut media ever questioned him about his military record .Lets’s see his DD-214. What was his MOS ? When did he do his 2 weeks active duty each year ? Did he ever go overseas for deployment on active duty ? Why isn’t anyone asking these questions ? George W. Bush was constantly harassed about his military record(for your information, going to AF flight school is very hard, ask Ella Grasso’s son,he flunked out),Dan Quale the same ,but our Connecticut media is content to not ask questions that might prevent the coronation of Crown Prince Blumenthal to the US Senate, replacing the senator from Countrywide Mortgage, Chris Dodd, Exactly how will Blumenthal be different from Dodd ? Dodd has more and whiter hair.
The McMahon campaign fired the Vietnam shot way too early which was a stupid move. This played out in May, he apologized and it’s over. Why her campaign is revisiting this again really doesn’t make much sense. The people who were appalled back then still are, the people who don’t care still don’t care. Running these ads on a dead issue isn’t going to win McMahon any additional votes.
Fuzzy’s right, Blumenthal did do a poor job convincing people he was a Vietnam vet.
He also did a remarkably poor job as AG. He clearly does a lousy job at lying, since he gets caught in so many of them. And he’s been doing a particularly poor job of campaigning for Senate this past year, letting a total political unknown from the world of pro wrestling erase his 40 point lead.
Vote for Blumenthal! He sucks at everything!
ANYONE who “claims” to be a viet nam veteran sickens me, I didn’t serve in Nam,, my term of tudy was in Berlin, 75-78, but I served with men that deserve more respect than liars like this !!! PLEASE DO NOT PUT A BALD FACED LIAR IN OUR GOVERNMENT !
