Simmons Sheds More Support-McMahon Up By 10.

The Quinnipiac Poll delivers bad news for Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Rob Simmons.  He’s lost nearly a quarter of his support among Republicans in the last 10 months and now trails political novice and wrestling mogul Linda McMahon 44-34 among Republicans.  Investor and financial commentator Peter Schiff’s support has risen 5 points to 9 percent.

Conservatives (50-29) and women (50-28) provide McMahon with her margin over Simmons, suggesting that her strategy of highlighting Simmon’s support for late-term abortions, cap-and-trade, and ending the secret ballot in certain union elections is working. We’ll likely see more grainy photos of the the term congressman in McMahon’s barrage of mailings to Republican primary voters.

The poll comes at a difficult time for Simmons as he tries to boost his fundraising numbers in the sprint to the March 31st end of the 1st quarter of the year.  Falling so far behind McMahon will make those ducats a tough sell in the next two weeks.

While McMahon enjoys a 17 point swing in the race for the nomination since the January Q Poll, she, like the other Republicans, is on course for a trampling by popular Democrat Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.  He enjoys a commanding lead for his party’s nomination.

Blumenthal leads McMahon by 33 points, down from 41 points in January.  He beats Simmons by 36 points, down 1.  The Republicans candidates will be chanting “Scott Brown” and “Martha Coakley” to cast those margins as something other than the wide chasms they look like to any sensible person.  Campaigns are run by starry-eyed tough guys, who mine the grimmest numbers for good news.
