Simmons Sighting.
The odd odyssey of suspended U.S. Senate hopeful Rob Simmons started his day early with an appearance before about 60 Republicans in distant Kent, Connecticut. Simmons traveled more than 100 miles from Stonington to Kent this morning to appear at what is usually a sparsely attended review of the legislative session featuring state Senator Andrew Rorabach and Republican House members from the region. Simmons arrived on his own but appeared to meet an assistant there.
Candidates and entourages outnumbered the locals at the Fife and Drum. Each candidate, including the vanquished Simmons and his tormentor, Linda McMahon, was given one minute to speak. Simmons brandished reports by The Yankee Institute and did a riff on the explosive growth of Connecticut’s government. He served in the state legislature from 1991 until he was elected to Congress in 2000.
If you want to sell a lot of Tupperware between now and August 10th, tell Republican primary candidates you’re having a gathering of a few of the faithful. They’ll show up at the opening of an envelope if it means shaking a few Republican hands. Even a candidate who is not running, might be running, would like to be running, and/or is miffed at his tumble will join the crowd.

Mr. Simmons, who is not actively campaigning for the U.S. Senate, drives across the state to talk about out-of-control spending by the state government – in which he once served. Well, that is certainly better than his talking about cap & trade, card check, ACORN and the fact that he voted with Pelosi nearly 60 percent of the time — those are the issues/positions that Republicans rejected when they voted to endorse Linda McMahon at the GOP Convention last month.
Mr. Simmons consistently states that he is proud of his record. But he elected not to run again in CT-4 — where, if you believe his supporters, he could have glided to victory. Instead, he chooses to pursue a stealth campaign for the U.S. Senate, going to events where candidates outnumber local voters.
Simmons running in CT-4 would have been interesting…since he lives in and represented CT-2.
>>But he elected not to run again in CT-4
He’s never run in the 4th district.

Kevin, you WERE NOT there, I was. Simmons arrived BY HIMSELF and did not meet any “assistant” there. He and I were among the last to leave and he was there by himself and left by himself.
This is not a usually a “sparsely attended event” as you wrongly said it was, it was as usual a very well attended event organized by State Central Committee member John Morris who’s been doing this for years. First Selectmen from Washington, Warren, Morris and Goshen were there along with many 30th district RTC members and Republican activists. I’ve been attending this event for years and it’s usually a very well attended event by Republicans, RTC members and local Republican leaders in the 30th district.
Yes, almost every statewide candidate for office was there including McMahon, Fedele, Garber, Farrell and Orchuili. There were no “entourages” as you stated. Linda had one person with her and Greenberg had one non-30th district person with him from Wolcott and Juliana Simone who is from Barkhamsted who has attended this event in the past. Three 5th CD candidates were there too, Greenberg, Bernier and Caligiuri. Candidates and their entourages DID NOT outnumber the locals as you wrongly stated.
You continue to impugn your integrity by making false statements and you should be more careful in the future before you post misinformation. You regularly violate Journalism 101 by not checking your sources. You’re a smart guy (I think) and I know you can do better than this unless you’re doing it deliberately which if true is most unfortunate.

Well put Caitlin, couldn’t have said it better myself.
