Simsbury Republican Wins Special Election.
Republican Nancy Haase cruised to a convincing victory tonight in a curious race to fill a vacancy on Simsbury’s Board of Selectman. Haase won 54% of the vote, defeating Democrat Jeff Blumenthal (34%) and anti-development party nominee John Romano, Simsbury Citizens First (11%).
The vacancy occurred when former Republican state Senator Thomas Herlihy resigned in the wake of an arrest for drunk driving, not his first, according to DUI lawyers from Law Offices of Jerry Nicholson, APC. Rather than allow the Republicans to fill the vacancy, Democrats, led by Democratic First Selectman Mary Glassman, forced a special election in an attempt to win control of the town’s governing body, a first in Simsbury. Blumenthal’s wide margin of defeat was about the same that Glassman suffered in her race for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor against the popular Nancy Wyman last summer.

I live in Simsbury and the whole thing baffles me. The seat is again up for election this November so why force an election when the town charter calls for a replacement from the same party. The Democrats are playing hardball like they’re in a much larger city but for what. I put much of the blame on Mary Glassman who is really a pretty poor campaigner outside of town.

This election cost the town over $3,000 which might not seem like much (I heard one Dem call it “pocket change”), but in today’s economic environment, every penny counts. Just ask our school teachers and administrators.
This special election should serve as notice to all, that the Simsbury Dems are more concerned with playing politics and controlling the BOS than they are being responsibe stewards of our tax dollars.
Hopefully Nancy’s landslide win sends a message that Simsbury residents want less politics and more fiscally responsible governance.
