Six is enough. Tony Hwang tells Senate Republicans he will not seek a 7th term.

State Senator Tony Hwang has told his 10 Senate Republicans he will not seek a seventh two-year term representing the 28th District. Hwang has endured the worst three months of his 18 years in the legislature.

The Fairfield Republican began a confident campaign last year for the town’s February s-exist election for first selectman. He lost by more than 10% after weeks of a right royal barracking by letters from local Democrats and Republican Tim Herbst, formerly of Trumbull.

As his first selectman campaign was coming apart, Hwang picked us a Republican opponent for his Senate re-election campaign. Newtown Republican Amybeth Laroche announced she would run for the party’s nomination in the four-town district—whatever Hwang’s fare in the first selectman campaign. Laroche began her campaign with a host of endorsements from local party notables, including House members serving towns in the 28th. Laroche also began her campaign with the support of Senator Rob Sampson, a Wolcott Republican popular with right wing party activists.

Hwang was expected to repeat his announcement surrounded by friends at tonight’s Fairfield Republican delegate caucus.

Fairfield Democrat Rob Blanchard is the favorite for his party’s nomination in a now open seat in a district that has become more friendly to Democrats.
