There He Goes Again.

Republican Linda McMahon marks debate Monday with a 30-second ad that has something old and something new.  It’s the inevitable Vietnam ad. This is what comes from stumbling over the minimum wage last week. The 30 second spot includes the famous Sergeant Richard “I-served-in-Vietnam” Blumenthal Norwalk clip from 2008.  It adds to our universe of unhappy knowledge a 2003 video recording of the attorney general telling a Bridgeport audience, “When we returned, we saw nothing of this gratitude.” There were no rallies for the New Haven transportation unit of the Marine Corps Reserves.  We will stipulate to that, but that’s not what he means.

Five months after the first recording of the fantasist run wild surfaced, it is still unsettling to see and hear Connecticut’s chief civil law enforcement officer make his dishonorable claim.  To see them in two recordings five years apart suggests this was not a man making a slip, but a sustained course of conduct.  We may never understand the psychology of it, but it seems plain old nutty–and unsettling from someone who hopes to go from one powerful job to another.
