To Mark Another 50th Anniversary: Mississippi Goddam.

Eighteen days after Martin Luther King’s August 28, 1963 triumphant march on Washington, a bomb exploded in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young girls were killed and much, though not all, of the nation was shocked. The remarkable Nina Simone wanted to get a gun but was convinced to write a song instead. The result was “Mississippi Goddam”, an anthem of despair and defiance. It reverberates through history by the side of Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech.
