What About Mary?

Nancy Wyman, the endorsed candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, today filed her pile of documents showing she’s qualified for public financing by raising $75,000 in small contributions.  This makes her the second candidate for statewide office to reach the threshold.  Or does it?

Wyman’s opponent, Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman, is said to have hit the $75,000 earlier this month and then…..nothing.  A vigorous advocate a of public financing of campaigns, Glassman complained about the advantage enjoyed by rich candidates until one asked her to the self-funders’ ball.  Glassman hasn’t claimed the $375,000 in taxpayer booty that comes with meeting the law’s requirements.  She may be having second thoughts about the logistics of coordinating expenditures with self-funding running-mate Ned Lamont, who was also once an advocate of public financing of campaigns–but not his.

Wyman, the target of harsh comparisons by Team Glassman, won’t be shy about pointing out the contrast between Glassman’s claims and her actions, should Mary forego public financing.

Republican wrestling mogul Linda McMahon will profit by taking notes when the fierce Wyman drags Glassman into the ring.
