Yankee Institute Shows High Hurdles for Republicans in 2012.
The Yankee Institute survey on the state of Connecticut voter sentiments brings discouraging news for any Republican contemplating a run for the United States Senate seat being vacated by incumbent Joseph Lieberman. President Barack Obama’s approval rating stands at a formidable 64%. If that persists into next year, the Republican nominee for the Senate will have to attract an historic number of ticket splitters to buck the tide at the top of the Democratic ticket. The poll also found that 52% of those questioned would probably support re-electing the Democratic president.
With 58% of those surveyed having considered leaving Connecticut due to the hefty tax burden living in the state imposes, there may be fewer and fewer voters sympathetic to a message that emphasizes a smaller, less intrusive government. Eventually, more of those residents may go from thinking about departing to exiting the state for climes more welcoming to innovation and growth.

The Northeast remains a curiously insular place. I’m a midwest transplant (25 years in CT) but I still find my neighbors astoundingly ignorant of the rest of the country. For that matter, for all the talk about how nice it is to be close to NY or Boston, none of my neighbors ever go there.
So it appears natural for Gov. Malloy to compare our taxes with Mass or RI rather than Indiana or SC. This may reassure the electorate, but I can tell you it is not the comparison businesses or entrepreneurs do. Gov. Rell always participated in this thinking, citing our “quality of life” as why companies would not leave. Maybe we need to buy a Southwest Airlines book of tickets for these people.
I’ve been to a lot of the so called low tax states. They are boring and ugly. They have bad restaurants. You cannot get a good pizza. Their schools stink. All their neighborhoods look the same. The land is flat without any character. They have no history. My family doesn’t live there. So what if they have a baseball team or whatever. They don’t have real teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox. If people don’t like it here, or if the 3 cent tax increase for six pack of beer is just the last straw, then leave. The Connecticut highways out have no tolls. Use them.
The problem is Republicans do not make the case against the Democrats. Where is McKinney and Cafero on a counter proposal to Malloy’s huge tax increases? No where.
Make the case and educate people. Republicans will win.
Or they can spit in the face of social conservatives and gun owners. Ever seen McKinney’s ratings with both? Answer F.
Liberals will always vote for Democrats when given the choice. Conservatives either leave the state or stay home.
